Why Headlights Turn Yellow — And How Restoration Actually Works

Modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate, not glass. Polycarbonate is tough and light, which is why manufacturers use it, but it degrades under ultraviolet light. To manage that, the factory sprays the outside of every lens with a hard UV-blocking coating.

That factory coating is what fails. Years of sun, heat cycling, road debris, and car-wash chemicals break it down, and once it starts to go it goes unevenly — which is the cloudy, patchy yellow you see. Underneath, the polycarbonate itself begins to oxidize too. In Las Vegas this happens faster than almost anywhere: more sun hours, higher UV index, and higher surface temperatures.

This matters for more than looks. A hazed lens scatters the beam instead of projecting it. You can lose a large share of usable light output, which shows up as poor reach on unlit roads at night. It is a safety issue, not just a cosmetic one.

Here is why wiping them does nothing: the damage is in the surface layer of the lens, not on it. No cleaner, toothpaste trick, or spray-on product removes failed coating and oxidized plastic. Products that appear to work are usually filling the haze temporarily with an oil that washes off within weeks.

Real restoration is a sanding process. The lens is masked off to protect surrounding paint, then wet-sanded through progressively finer grits — starting coarse enough to actually cut through the failed coating and the oxidized layer beneath it, then stepping down until the sanding marks are fine enough to polish out. The lens is then machine polished back to optical clarity.

And then the critical step: a new UV coating. At that point the lens is bare polycarbonate with no protection at all — more vulnerable than it was before you started. If it is left unsealed, it will begin hazing again almost immediately, often within a few months. A restoration that skips the sealing step is not a repair, it is a countdown.

Done properly — sanded, polished, and sealed with a UV coating — a restored lens stays clear for years. It is one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost things you can do to an older vehicle, and we can do both lenses on-site in about an hour.
